Maths

At Holy Cross we believe that all pupils can achieve in maths. Our maths curriculum provides opportunities for children to experience success, raise aspirations, develop resilience and does so in a way which is relevant to them for today and tomorrow. We ensure that children are given the time to develop their fluency and then use these skills to solve more complex real-life problems. In addition to developing and embedding core mathematical understanding, maths should also make children excited, curious and enthusiastic to find out.

Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

Our intent is to provide our learners with a rich and progressive curriculum that builds on the skills and concepts in mathematics. We intend for our learners to be challenged through sequential lessons, giving them opportunities for problem solving, calculation and to increase their use of mathematical vocabulary. Our children will build upon their knowledge and understanding from Year R to Year 6.

Implementation

We implement our approach of mathematics through a clear progression of skills and concepts.

We follow the EYFS Framework and National Curriculum. Our teachers plan creative, enjoyable and challenging lessons, using the NCETM and White Rose.

We are beginning to implement a Teaching for Mastery approach. Problem solving and reasoning will be threaded through all parts of the maths lesson.

Impact

Children will make good progress from their starting points, develop excellent mathematical skills and have the resilience required to tackle increasingly challenging mathematical problems.

We aim for our children to:

· Become fluent mathematicians by applying their knowledge rapidly and accurately.

· Be good problem solvers by applying their understanding of mathematics to a range of challenges.

· Justify their reasoning with increased mathematical vocabulary.

SEND

Mathematics is taught to all children whatever their ability. The school provides a broad and balanced education to all children. Learning opportunities are provided which are matched to the needs of children with learning difficulties. Work in mathematics takes into account of the targets set for individual children in their profile and this will be reflected in their lessons
